Gynaecology Scan
A Pelvic Scan or Gynaecology Scan is an ultrasound procedure designed to closely assess the pelvic structures, including the uterus (womb), cervix, and ovaries. This scan is commonly used to diagnose various gynaecological conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, adenomyosis, endometrial polyps, cervical polyps, and ovarian cysts.
Scan Highlights
Purpose:
- To assess the overall health of the female reproductive organs
- To diagnose conditions such as ovarian cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, or pelvic inflammatory disease
- To monitor the effectiveness of fertility treatments
Procedure:
- Duration: Approximately 20 minutes
- The scan can be performed at any time, depending on the specific reason for the scan
- Ultrasound scan performed by a GMC-registered specialist gynaecologist or sonographer
- Optional in-person or online consultation with a GMC-registered specialist gynaecologist (additional charges may apply)
By providing detailed images of these structures, the scan helps in identifying any abnormalities or pathologies associated with them, including changes in the uterus size, shape, and any pathologies, the cervix size, length, and any pathologies, the uterine lining thickness and any pathologies, and any pathologies in the ovaries and fallopian tubes.
A pelvic scan is recommended if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- Pelvic Pain or Lower Abdominal (Tummy) Pain: Experiencing persistent or severe pelvic or lower abdominal pain can be a sign of various gynaecological conditions. This type of pain may indicate issues such as ovarian cysts, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), or even fibroids. A pelvic scan helps to visualise the internal pelvic structures, allowing for the identification of any abnormalities or pathologies that could be causing the pain
- Irregular, Heavy, Erratic, or Painful Periods: Menstrual cycles that are irregular, unusually heavy, erratic, or particularly painful can be a cause for underlying health issues. Conditions like fibroids, adenomyosis, or polyps can contribute to these symptoms. A pelvic scan provides detailed imaging of the uterus and its lining, helping to pinpoint any abnormalities that may be affecting your menstrual cycle
- Bleeding at Unusual Times During Your Period Cycle: Spotting or bleeding outside of your regular menstrual period is not typical and could be indicative of conditions such as endometrial or cervical polyps, hormonal imbalances, or early signs of more serious conditions like cervical cancer. A pelvic scan can help in evaluating the uterine lining, cervix, and other pelvic structures to determine the cause of such bleeding
- Unusual Vaginal Discharge: Unusual vaginal discharge, especially if it is accompanied by an odor, itching, or irritation, can be a sign of infection or other gynecological issues like polyps or malignancies. A pelvic scan can be used to investigate the source of the discharge by assessing the condition of the uterus, cervix, and ovaries
- Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (IUCD): If you have an IUDIUCD (commonly known as an intrauterine device or IUD) in place, a pelvic scan may be recommended to check its position and ensure that it is properly placed within the uterus. An IUCD that has shifted or become dislodged can cause pain, bleeding, and other complications. The scan ensures that the device is in the correct position and functioning as intended
- Menopausal Bleeding: Bleeding after menopause is always a cause for concern and should be evaluated immediately. It could be a sign of conditions like endometrial atrophy, polyps, or even endometrial cancer. A pelvic scan is crucial in examining the thickness of the uterine lining and detecting any abnormalities in the pelvic organs that may be causing postmenopausalpost-menopausal bleeding
